I made this post yesterday stating that the image is a poster from the McCarthy era.  Turns out, it’s a Tumblr-ized excerpt from a letter King Leopold of Belgium wrote to Queen Victoria in 1845.  Here’s where I got my comeuppance:) 

Incidentally, it also read as a paraphrase (or vice versa) from William Cleveland’s 2008 book, Art and Upheaval: Artists on the World’s Frontlines, where he says “Historically, those intent on eliminating opposition and suppressing popular dissent have made a priority of quickly eliminating creators and thinkers from their midsts.”
